In the southwest, grass is usually in short supply, but not in the Upper Valley. Neighborhoods in this area can be accessed from several streets off of Doniphan Drive, which runs south and north into New Mexico. El Pasoans who want to be a short, scenic drive from pecan orchards and Old Mesilla, the historic town square of Mesilla N.M., look for homes in the upper valley. A mix of older homes and new construction can be found in the upper valley. The advantage of homes in the upper valley is they offer some of the most acreage and square footage in the city. Homeowners who raise horses look to the upper valley for the land they need. This slice of country life is just 10 miles from downtown. Or for something even closer, Doniphan Drive features local eateries, antique shops and live music venues, such as Aceitunas Beer Garden and Little Bit of Texas. For avid golfers moving here, the El Paso Country Club, an upper valley staple since 1922, is their first stop. For a fun afternoon with the family playing bumper boats or racing go-karts, the upper valley has Adventure Zone and Western Playland, a 30-acre amusement park located in Sunland Park, N. M., off Sunland Park Drive past Doniphan Drive. Closed seasonally, Western Playland is expected to open again in 2018.
