The new year has already brought an abundance of new infrastructure to the Westside but one of the biggest entertainment complexes new to the area is Topgolf, an extravagant three-story, high-tech golf driving range that can be seen from the westbound lane of Interstate 10 between the Executive and Sunland Park exits.
The $15.7 million entertainment complex, which sits on eight acres, is part of the Montecillo Smart Growth Community, which encompasses 300 acres that stretch from Mesa Street to Interstate 10.
Topgolf, a 65,000-square-foot venue located at 365 Vin Rambla Drive on the Westside of El Paso, opened its door to the El Paso public on Jan. 30, 2018.
“We are focused on creating great times for all of our guests and cannot wait to welcome the local community for an unforgettable experience,” noted Topgolf El Paso Director of Operations Chilo Mendoza.
More than 500 full- and part-time employees were hired in advance of the opening. Topgolf began recruiting locally in November, offering those hired free Topgolf game play, food and beverage discounts, and the opportunity to obtain medical, vision and dental insurance and participate in a retirement savings program. “We couldn’t be more excited to create 500 jobs in El Paso,” Mendoza said.
Intended for avid golfers and beginners alike, Topgolf guests play point-scoring golf games using microchipped balls that instantly score themselves, showing players the accuracy and distance of their shots on a TV screen in their climate-controlled hitting bay. The facility also offers chef-prepared meals, beverages and music.
Topgolf, a global sports entertainment leader, entertains more than 10.5 million guests in 36 locations annually.
“El Paso is a vibrant and fast-growing city that is ideal for Topgolf,” noted Devin Charhon, Topgolf director of real estate development. “The concept has been very well-received in other markets across the state, so we are excited to expand our Texas footprint while also having the opportunity to access the population in Mexico.” Charhon said he estimates that Topgolf El Paso will serve approximately 450,000 visitors in its first year of operation.
“The City [of El Paso] has been fantastic to work with, and we are grateful for all of the enthusiasm and support shown by the entire community,” he said.
Topgolf announced its plan to build a complex in El Paso in 2016. For the Sun City, it’s a hole-in-one, according to El Paso City Manager Tommy Gonzalez.
“The entertainment venue will not only improve our overall quality as a city, but it will also be a catalyst for growth,” Gonzalez said in response to the November 2016 announcement. “We view this expansion as an economic development milestone that will bring great opportunities to both the City of El Paso and the Topgolf brand.”
El Pasoan Morgan Furr, 25, said she was surprised to see Topgolf’s parking lot completely full when she drove by shortly after its opening. “I didn’t think it was going to be as popular as it apparently is,” Furr said. “I’m excited to try out their fancy food and drink options before whacking balls toward those beautiful Franklin Mountains.”
